Calisthenics
Simple movements that are considered basic exercises can be done by almost everyone from the young to the elderly. These basic exercises are often termed calisthenics to describe these simple moves. Historically, the evolution of calisthenics is linked to gymnastics. It was a simplified version of gymnastics that consisted of sit-ups, crunches, push-ups, pull-ups, squats, calf-raises and dips. Usually, the very young and the very old benefit from such exercises because it does not require a lot of complicated movements.
In different countries such as Australia, calisthenics is a competitive sport among women predominantly aged 12 and younger. It simulates rhythmic gymnastics, with or without props, song and dance and figure-marching. It might consist of other forms of aesthetics and performing sports. But for most countries like the United States, calisthenics include simple movements with or without weights or other equipment, and is usually done as warm-up and cool-down activities for other types of training programs.
Benefits
The benefits of calisthenics include developing gracefulness and flexibility. Like all exercises, it improves on the sense of well-being and you can tone specific parts of the body by isolating muscle groups. You don’t need to sweat as much with calisthenics but you have to work harder and exercise more regularly if you want more obvious results. With calisthenics, you have greater chances of correcting your alignment and posture brought by the graceful movements that you do. Also, a study was conducted on senior citizens improving on their driving because of calisthenics.
Examples
Calisthenics are exercise patterns that combine sit-ups, crunches, push-ups, pull-ups, squats, calf-raises and dips. Usually these are termed floor exercises because of how these are performed.
Physiologic responses
With the graceful movements, calisthenics increases heart rate and muscle flexibility. Because of the simple movements, calisthenics preps up and warms up the muscles, which is why it is a good form of warm-up exercise.
